🔗The collaboration aims to create metaverse avatar costumes, fashion clothing popup stores, plan metaverse and online linked commerce, develop new technologies for integrating fashion and avatar costumes.
🤝Through this partnership, LG Uplus plans to verify the potential of the fashion metaverse market using its virtual office service ‘MetaSlap’ and derive various business models, such as sales, giveaways, and brand virtual stores. The collaboration will enhance the individuality of avatars and serve as a catalyst for the development of metaverse commerce.
In a strategic <a href="https://www.kedglobal.com/metaverse/newsView/ked202307100005">collaboration</a>, LG Uplus plans to establish a virtual store offering a diverse range of fashion products and accessories. <h4>About Isaac and Kalico Design Ltd.</h4>
Isaac Yuen is a well-respected fashion designer and is the founder and design director at Kalico, a boutique fashion consultancy based in Hong Kong with clients across China and South East Asia. His long list of achievements dating back to the 1980s makes him incredibly knowledgeable in the fashion industry. Working as chief designer in multiple fashion conglomerates in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Australia for brands such as Jeanswest, Hang Ten and Goldlion, he often manages teams of twenty or more designers. Speaking from experience, he mentioned that a well-established design system is needed to monitor “design productivity”.

Design productivity means rapid design selection, the ability to meticulously manipulate new designs visually, reducing lead time and improving time-to-market, those were the main pillars of the 1980s fast fashion formula.
His latest achievement was representing Hong Kong at the 1st International Thai Silk Design Contest, which showcases modern and traditional Thai silk and design. This international event attracted industry leaders from 71 countries, gathering creative minds from each corner of the world.

“During my position in Jeanswest in the ’90s, I introduced 2D CAD to the company, and my design team immediately improved their productivity by 50%. More than 10 years ago, I was really curious about what 3D fashion designer software could do for me, but it did not go well because the realism and the speed were not there, so I abandoned the idea,” said Isaac. However, this did not stop him from exploring 3D applications because he knows that it helps with reducing sampling cost, time and range planning.

As a result, Isaac’s company has adopted a 3D CAD and they have been using it for a couple of years. His experience with the software only satisfied 50% of his expectations and he is yearning for a more comprehensive system to suit the fast-paced digitization during COVID. Isaac needs a technology partner that can grow with his creativity and more importantly, with his customer’s demands of NFTs, digital showrooms, fashion gamification, and virtual try-on capabilities. By implementing 3D technology, Nike enhances digital shopping experience for its members, and successfully attracted more signups for the virtual styling experience.

<h4>ABSTRACT</h4>
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the global fashion world and it accelerated the use of digitalization in design, production and retail. 3D garment simulation technologies provide opportunities for fashion scholars to create and disseminate their creative outputs (e.g., fashion exhibition). This paper examines the possibility applying the 3D garment simulation technology (i.e., Z-emotion) to replicate a digital version of a lace dress from a fashion collection entitled ‘Cross Your Heart’. The results showed that digital fashion could benefit design and production of traditional Korean dress (i.e., Hanbok), a garment characterized by its design ease (e.g., folds) and stiff fabrics, by simplifying the development process.
<h4>BACKGROUND</h4>
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted on the global fashion industry as well as the fashion education sector. Although a majority of its impacts have been disruptive and detrimental, it has positively accelerated the pre-existing industry-wide transformations including digitization and sustainability (Brydges, Heinze and Retamal, 2020). This acceleration of digitization has provided a new pathway to create and showcase collections by utilizing the 3D garment simulation technologies without physically constructing the garments or displaying them at a venue. This is in line with the sustainable and ecofriendly fashion movement. In addition, it opens up the possibilities for the fashion scholars to exhibit their creative research outputs without physical and geographical restrictions (e.g., time and space). <h4>1. DIGITAL FASHION</h4>
The term ‘digital fashion’ refers to the phenomenon of the digitalization across design, production and retail in the fashion industry. Noris et al. (2021) broadly defined digital fashion as the overlapping area between fashion, and information and communication technologies, that has no contextual map available. They further identified three categories of ‘digital fashion’ as follows: 1) communication and marketing (practices; enabling tools; and societal implications), 2) design and production (product &amp; development; and process &amp; technology implementation), and 3) culture and society (culture; education; and society). Crewe (2013) identified three ways in which digital fashion has shifted the fashion landscapes: 1) remediation and refashioning existing media such as fashion magazines and photography, 2) devolution of fashion authority from magazine editors and designers to bloggers and consumers, and 3) creation of always-on and always-connected consumer communities. Slooten, the co-founder of Fabricant, a digital couture house, defined digital fashion as anything that has to do with fashion beyond the physical realm, which could suit a wearer’s digital identity (Pinent, n.d.).
Fashion practitioners who are working in design and production often refer to digital fashion as the process and outputs created by virtual 3D garment simulation technology as ‘fashion in design and production’.
<h4>2. VIRTUAL 3D GARMENT SIMULATION AND Z-EMOTION</h4>
The virtual 3D garment simulation started in late 1980s (Volino et al., 2005). It involved the simulation of the highly deformable cloth properties (i.e., folds and winkles) whilst interacting with the body measurements for fitting and required complex, yet swift, and efficient computational methods. Innovation and development in computer aided design (CAD) technologies brought a range of cutting edge virtual 3D garment simulation programmes on the market. Major market players include Browzwear, CLO 3D, Optitex and Z-emotion. The applications of these programmes streamline the design process from the ‘initial prototype creation (i.e., virtual prototyping)’ to the ‘final fit analysis’. The workers who possess these 3D garment simulation skills are in high demand despite the industrywide job loss due to the COVID pandemic. Z-emotion provides cutting-edge solutions to the fashion industry’s digital transformation process. It also allows the end-consumers to interact with 3D garments in real time. Its 3D CAD software entitled ‘Z-weave’ enables the user to develop fashion ideas for virtual products in seconds (Z-emotion, 2021).

<h4>3. CREATIVE SCHOLARSHIP</h4>
Fashion exhibitions are wide-reaching and have become a vital form of public, creative scholarship (Green et al., 2021). In the area of fashion and textile design, creative work, in particular that for a fashion exhibition has been considered to be one form of research output. This is in line with the findings of Boyer (1991), who identified various research outlets for scholars in the field of higher education. Thus, the fashion design and textile design staff/researchers at the Institute of Textiles and Clothing, an academic department of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, are encouraged to showcase their work at both national and international levels. Many of the researchers’ creative outputs have been exhibited at an international level, providing a discussion platform for cultural exchange and sources of inspiration. The solo exhibition ‘Cross your Heart’ was one of the author’s fashion exhibitions and it demonstrated creative scholarship.
The solo exhibition ‘Cross your Heart’ showcased a vintage-inspired luxury intimate apparel collection created by utilizing the author’s innovative bra patternmaking method. Since its advent in the late 19th century, the bra has evolved into a highly complex and sophisticated garment which serves multiple functions including supporting the breasts and creating the fashionable shape of the time. A number of social, political, and technological changes have had a profound impact on the development of modern bra design. Various changes in the role of women in society with origins in the two World Wars, an increasingly fast-changing and innovative fashion scene, and changes in feminist attitudes brought about substantial changes in attitudes towards both the bra and female identity. Thus, the bra often took centre stage in reflecting some of these momentous changes. For example, the feminist’s ‘bra burning’ movement of the 1960s clearly identifies the bra as bondage to the female identity in a social context, whereas Madonna’s iconic, 1990’s cone bra represented female empowerment. However, this complex bra design process — particularly the cup design variations — has not been fully understood despite its long history. Rapid developments in both smart materials and bra production technology have transformed the two-dimensional pattern making process into a three-dimension process, and this rendered the two-dimensional bra pattern making skills obsolete. As a consequence, two-dimensional bra pattern design is a relatively under-researched subject.

Due to the COVID pandemic social distancing, creating and showcasing a digital collection without physical and geographical restrictions would be timely. Thus, a dress made out of a black see-through lace fabric from the ‘Cross your heart’ collection was selected for the collaboration which was undertaken with Z-emotion.
<h4>4. A TRIAL: CREATIVE SCHOLARSHIP x Z-EMOTION</h4>
Despite developments in CAD technologies, visualisation of all over lace with lace edge is a difficult task. Thus, the authors and Z-emotion undertook to test the programme to assess its simulation of the lace fabric. Figure 2 shows front and back views of the 3D simulated virtual dress and the actual dress. A golden brown colour silk satin lining served to bring out the details of the black lace surface details.

This function is to assist designers to check the fit of a garment pattern against the body measurements whilst helping consumers to make a purchase decision via e-commerce platforms. Figure 3 shows the high visual fidelity of Z-weave’s 3D simulation outputs on two different custom body avatars.
‘Fitmap’ is a feature that shows the pressure over the body to check the garment fit. Red colour indicates a tighter fit whilst green colour indicates looser fit.
<h4>CONCLUSION</h4>
The current fashion market size is estimated at US$760 billion with annual growth rate of 11.4% whilst there are over 3.8 billion digital buyers worldwide (Z-emotion, 2021). The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the innovations in digitalization across design, production and retail in the fashion industry. The potential of 3D garment simulation technologies are not only for the industry but also for all stakeholders. This trial demonstrated the possibility of digital fashion transforming the lives of those involved in fashion, and in particular, creative fashion scholars. The results indicated that digital fashion could benefit design and production of the traditional Korean dress (i.e., Hanbok), a garment characterized by design ease (e.g., folds) and stiff fabrics, by simplifying the laborious process. Thus, future research may include a virtual exhibition of museum archive Hanbok collections, virtual design and production of Hanbok that are made of non-traditional fabric such as an all-over lace, and digital Hanbok design and production workshops.

3D technology was introduced to Hong Kong in the 1990s and has since popularized in various local industries. However, the application has not been favored in the fashion and apparel industry. The government saw great potential of 3D technology application in the fashion and apparel industry. So, the Hong Kong Productivity Council launched a project “To Promote the 3D Design &amp; Technology for Fashion/Garment Industry in Supporting Re-industrialization” funded by Innovation and Technology Commission (Innovation and Technology Fund, General Support Program).
The project included 1 international conference, 3 technical workshops and 4 application sharing seminars. The objective was to help Hong Kong fashion/apparel practitioners to have a better understanding of 3D technology and to promote their application of 3D technology. This project was also in line with Hong Kong Government’s re-industrialization plan, to aid the application of 3D technology in fashion/apparel industries to catch up with foreign countries.

Held across four separate events in Beijing, Tokyo, London and San Francisco. Seventeen companies from over six countries will present and exhibit their innovations to investors, press and potential business partners.
This year’s VIVE X Demo Days will take place in Beijing on May 8, Tokyo on May 16, London on May 23 and San Francisco on June 4. Over the next month, companies will showcase their innovations in enterprise tools and solutions, workforce training, healthcare solutions, streaming technology, social applications, location-based entertainment, foundational technology, and more.
Since the inaugural batch of companies in 2016, VIVE X has become the most active investor in the VR/AR industry with about 100 companies now advancing from the accelerator program. VIVE X operates out of San Francisco, London, Beijing, Shenzhen, Taipei, and Tel Aviv. • Primitive is providing businesses with VR collaboration for distributed software teams. The Primitive Immersive Development Environment turns complex software analyses into interactive 3D structures that are displayed in a collaborative VR space.
• ybVR’s multi-viewpoint optimized streaming technology and powers immersive live broadcasting on-demand video content in 8K resolution.
• Visby builds foundational holographic imaging software that puts the ‘real’ in extended reality. Visby’s light field technology allows film and video professionals to capture and publish photorealistic video for immersive and holographic displays.
• Modal was inspired by co-founder Nolan Bushnell’s success with Atari and Chuck E. Cheese. Modal brings a social, fun and active free-roam location-based VR entertainment to a mass audience.
<h4>London –</h4>
• Immersive Factory has developed virtual reality HSE (Health Safety &amp; Environment) training exercises based on real-life situations. All training courses, available on a dedicated platform, have been created in partnership with key account customers including Veolia, EDF, Colas, and Suez.
• LIV empowers VR content creators and game developers to grow, and monetize their audiences in real-time. The company has generated over 1 billion views of VR on social media since April 2018 and boasts the largest VR content creator community in the world.
• Kagenova is developing core technologies to engineer interactive realism at scale for next-generation immersive experiences. Their AI-based spatial360 product allows any 360 VR media to be viewed with six degrees of freedom (6 DOF), eliminating cyber motion sickness and greatly enhancing realism.
• 360Stories uses immersive 360º footage to transport you to the most amazing destinations on Earth. Listen to local’s story as they show you around their urban and natural landscapes in virtual reality. No amount of research online will truly represent the feeling of actually travelling, but surrounding yourself in 360Stories is close enough!
• z-emotion is building a fully connected 3D design platform for the apparel, knitwear and sportswear industry for the future of the digital supply chain. Furthermore, it provides predictive big data analytics to the entire manufacturing process and enables smarter, faster and more effective decisions.
<h4>Shenzhen –</h4>
• Inload excels in VR Kiosk design, manufacturing and operation. The company has an in-house R&amp;D lab, VR game studio, hardware production base and brand operation team. Its VR Kiosk business model has been expanding rapidly in many shopping malls in Shenzhen, generating positive cashflow, and it is soon to be replicated across the country.
• Yaoan — With 20 years of industrial experience in enterprise software, YaoAn has launched a VR security experience hall, VR immersive training system, VR emergency drill system, security training cloud platform and other industry solutions. They have emerged to be a leader in domestic security education and training.
<h4>Beijing –</h4>
• ifGames is one of the first VR game studios in China. It produced China’s 1st VR large area game title “Ark of the Stars” and won numerous awards including the Chin VR and Gyro VR game of the year. ifGames’ first full-body tracking VR title “CyberCraft” is highly acclaimed by critics and has already launched in major cities in China.
• ShinyVR was incubated in the National Defense Lab of Yanshan University, developing a molecular-level physical simulation engine SYVR, simulating key components of C919 (the first large commercial aircraft of China). The SYVR engine provides real-time simulation of large-scale complex scenarios, experiments, training and conceptual design visualization.
• Yuanji has developed a VR Judicial Visualization system enabling crime scene restoration for evidence to be presented directly and transparently. The system speeds up trial process and promotes social fairness and justice through science and technology empowerment.
<h4>Tel Aviv –</h4>
• Sixdof.space created a new tracking system technology that represents a breakthrough in both speed and accuracy. They combine optics, electronics and algorithms to offer a device urgently needed for current product development in multiple industries, beginning with VR.
• Ayayu Games develops, creates and manufactures patent pending VR-action controllers, which enables players to control and play with their action figures in their VR games and immersive experiences.

<h4>Making and buying clothes may change with a VR-based fashion design technology #SIGGRAPHAsia</h4>

The first booth was a clothing design VR under development by South Korea’s z-emotion, which was located right after entering the venue.
I went into into the VR world with head mounts. After stepping in, I saw a small mannequin which was a little shorter than I was 166 cm tall. I also saw a few controls and buttons in the space like a folder, play/ stop button etc. I learnt that in the future, mannequins will be prepared by the system.
There was a paper pattern floating around the mannequin, using the remote control, I selected a clothing design from the folders and use the grip to stick it into the paper pattern. After that, I clicked the play button and the system sewed the clothes together to fit me.
<h4>It may be used to buy the one to make</h4>
As it was still in the development stage, I could not confirm how it looks on the body with different materials and cloth textures. Moreover, the response was slow and the ala was flawed. When I took off the hood and turned it into a cut saw, I had to do so by tearing it off. I personally thought it was smarter to erase it there.
As I mentioned, the smart apparel manufacturing with this VR was developed to change the job of designers and pattern makers. But I felt that this could also change the shopping experience of consumers.
<h4>If the return amount decreases, everyone will be happy</h4>
When shopping online, many shops allow you to return the item after you try it on, but it’s not easy for you to return the item. So, this VR technology can help you find your perfect fit by using your data to make your own avatar and dress up. For example, ZOZOSUIT is a system that measures your body so you can buy best fitting clothes. But I think the best fit for your body and the best style for you are different. I don’t think that’s data, it’s self-judgment. Therefore, I think there is a merit in physical shopping, and buying clothes after checking with your own eyes. Questions like “how this clothing fit your chest and buttocks” and “how many collars are open” can only be answered when you physically try something on.
<h4>Expect for custom-made clothes</h4>
I also thought it would be possible to distribute software to consumers for free, and allow them to order clothes with their original designs.
It seems like I’m hoping that I can put it on the consumer base in the near future, but there’s still a long way to go.
